Message from the BIBE Founding Steering Chair
On behalf of the ICBIBE-2008 chairs and committees, we welcome you to the 8th International IEEE Conference on BioInformatics & BioEngineering (ICBIBE-2008). We hope that this meeting to be prolific and challenging for your present and future research, and professional activities.
The ICBIBE series always provides a unique opportunity to researchers, scientists and practitioners to share knowledge and scientific achievements in the important research field, of Bioinformatics and Bioengineering and present state-of-the-art devices, methodologies and software tools for analyzing and solving complex scientific and engineering related to diseases and the function of the human body.
The success of this year’s ICBIBE-08 meeting is due to hard work and voluntary efforts of many people. From the post of the BIBE Founding Steering Chair we would like to express my sincere thanks to all these individuals, but especially we would like to express our great appreciation to the General Chairman, Dr. Konstantina Nikita and her Committees for her enormous efforts and outstanding performance making ICBIBE a major and important event of the IEEE in the field of Bioinformatics and Bioengineering. She has put together a very high quality program for the 8th ICBIBE-2008, which provides to the participants the opportunities and challenges.
Finally, we would like to acknowledge our appreciation to the sponsors and collaborators of the ICBIBE-08 meeting starting with the IEEE, the Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society, the Biological and Artificial Intelligence Society (BAIS), the National Technical University of Athens, The Greek National Academy of Science, the Greek Ministry of Education, the University of Ioannina, The Technical University of Madrid, the Wright State University Assistive Technologies Research Center, for their generous sponsorship and collaboration and for the continuous support of our efforts.
Once again welcome to ICBIBE-2008

Message from the BIBE 2008 General Chair
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the organizing committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 8th IEEE International Conference on BioInformatics and BioEngineering (BIBE 2008), and to the beautiful historic city of Athens.
It is a top priority of BIBE’s annual series to strengthen synergy between Bioinformatics and Bioengineering, two complementary disciplines that hold great promise for the advancement of research and development in diverse areas including complex medical and biological systems, environment, public health, drug design.
The Scientific Programme Committee’s unrelenting work under the expert leadership of the program chair Dimitris Fotiadis, assisted by his co-chairs Laura Roa and Gil Alterovitz has compiled an exciting scientific program for BIBE 2008 to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving disciplines of bioinformatics and bioengineering. This year we received over 300 high-quality papers. After careful evaluation of each submitted paper by at least three independent experts, the final scientific program features 158 oral presentations and over 40 poster presentations. One especially notable and welcome aspect of this year’s program is the balance between papers in bioinformatics and bioengineering fields. In addition, within BIBE 2008 plenary sessions, we will have the privilege and honour to attend invited lectures by world-renowned scientists on highly timely topics related to neuroendocrinology, neuroscience, early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease and cancer, biomedical image analysis, technology in support of global health, biobanks and systems biology, engineering the evolution of healthcare. We hope BIBE 2008 will offer a unique opportunity to view the broad range of topics in the fields of bioengineering and bioinformatics and to see first-hand the inherent interdisciplinary and interrelated nature of these fields.
Like every year, many people have worked hard behind the scenes to realize this demanding project and I would like to thank all of them. First, I would like to express my gratitude to our Steering Committee Chair, Nikos Bourbakis, for his most valuable help and advice. Many thanks go to our track chairs as well as the dedicated reviewers, who did an excellent job to preserve quality and promote academic excellence in the review process and provided valuable input to the conference program. In addition, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the members of the Organizing Committee, and especially to Ioannis Valavanis and Themis Exarchos, who have contributed to this venture with great energy in order to guarantee our meeting’s successful organization. Our work as BIBE 2008 organizers has been as easy as it could ever be thanks to the exceptional professionalism of our Conference Secretariat, MeetingPlanner.gr. But, the success of BIBE is mainly due to the hard work of all those people who submit papers, demos, and posters to the conference. We thank you all.
In parallel with the conference scientific program, we put together a relaxing social program - including dinners at unique venues with live music entertainment - which we hope will make BIBE 2008 a rewarding and memorable experience.
The city of Athens, one of the world's oldest cities with a recorded history of more than 3.000 years, needs no introduction: today it unifies the plethora of antiquities with parks, pedestrian streets and avenues and therein accommodates a great variety of cultural events and a lively nightlife. Cultural activities may include visits to the numerous museums and archaeological sites scattered through the Attica’s landscape, concerts and shows, as well as leisure visits to the flea market or taverns at Plaka just under the rock of the Acropolis. We hope you will find Athens is a city to satisfy all!
Once more, welcome to Athens and to BIBE 2008! Enjoy the thought-provoking sessions and savor the beauty of the city!
